Using the Academic Assistant System

Assistant Professor Shinichiro Komaki
・Assistant Professor, Division of Biological Science, Laboratory of Plant Cell Functional Biology (Hashimoto Lab.)
AA Ms. Humiko Nakahara

I have been using the Academic Assistant System since April 2018. I received my Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Bioscience and Biotechnology (Hashimoto Lab.) and joined as an assistant professor in July 2017, and I learned about the system from Assistant Professor Miyajima (Nakajima Lab.), who is also from the Hashimoto Lab. Dr. Nakahara, an academic assistant, is in charge of plant management and assists in experiments. In a botanical lab, we have to do the routine work of sowing and collecting seeds, but if I try to do that while working as an assistant professor, I would not be able to do my other work, so she helps me.

Mr. Nakahara has worked as a technician at both a company and a university, and it took some time for us to communicate with each other in the first few months. Now we can communicate easily, and every morning I inform her of the contents of my experiments, and she is assigned to help me with both the work of the Hashimoto Laboratory and my experiments under the Gender Equality Program of the Gender Equality Office.

Until last year, I would often pick up my child from the daycare center, bring him home, leave him in my wife's care, and return to work. Once the kids go home and start playing, they don't want to come back to the office. I am now able to come home early on a regular basis, and I also come back to work at night less often.
